A Guide to Language and Cultural Issues - December Issue

 

 Cine Festa

Tyneside cinema in association with the RLN, Gravity Consulting and the European Commercial Office (formerly the French Business Council) presents: Cine Festa - A celebration of Italian Cinema.

This short season of films running from January - March will showcase some of the best and most influential Italian movies ever released. You'll have the chance to see some of the old masters (Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini) and some of the newest, boldest artists (Nanni Moretti, Gabriele Salvatores) stamping their mark in both Italian and world film culture.

La Dolce Vita, Il Postino, Il Conformista and a new release Dopo Mezzanotte are among the films on show. For full details of all the films and dates visit our Events pages. Look out for details in our next issue of an opportunity for businesses to attend a short reception followed by a free showing of Nanni Moretti's Dear Diary or Davide Ferrario's After Midnight.

Large engineering and manufacturing company with an international client base dealing with pressure relief systems is looking for a Territory Sales Manager to cover Germany. Previous experience in a similar role would be preferred but training could be given to the right candidate.

Procter & Gamble is seeking highly motivated individuals to take on a variety of challenging roles at different levels with its European Financial Services Centre based at Cobalt Business Park, Newcastle upon Tyne. Vacancies exist in the Financial & Accounting Services organisation in the following service areas: General Accounting Cost and Product Accounting, Fixed Asset and Capital Accounting, Banking and Treasury Expense Control Reporting, Financial Data Reporting and Accounts Payable.

Bilingual Sales and Business Development Assistant (Engineering), Newcastle, £24k
Large European manufacturing and engineering company are looking to recruit a number of bilingual sales and business development assistants to join the international team dealing with customers throughout Europe. The languages covered are Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Polish, Czech and Spanish. Any combination of one or more of these languages will be considered.

German Medical Translator, Alnwick, £17k
Eclipse translations are seeking a graduate in German who is a native English speaker. French and Dutch skills would be a distinct advantage. Full training will be provided.

  North East language and cultural event

Welcome Host International - 31st January 9.30am-4.30pm, Stella House
This participative course organised by the One NorthEast Tourism Team provides a basic introduction to key phrases in foreign languages selected from Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Norwegian and Spanish. It also gives participants an appreciation of cultural differences to help improve services standards and expectations. The course is just £45.00 per person, participant materials, refreshments and lunch all included.   Student Award 2006 - £250 and a laptop up for grabs

The Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies is giving language students the chance to offer their opinions and experiences in a 1,000-word essay entitled, 'How does your experience of your course compare with any expectations you may have had?'

This opportunity is open to anyone studying languages, linguistics or area studies as part of their HE course. The winning essay will be put on the subject centre website and newsletter and will give the opportunity of going to the HE Academy Conference, all expenses paid. Talking business in many tongues - The Journal 02/12/05
A Manufacturer has seen a dramatic rise in its export business after moving a host of linguists into its North Tyneside base. North Shields based Elfab, which makes safety devices used in products including car air bags and aircraft ejector seats, has recorded an £800,000 year-on-year hike in export sales on a turnover of £7m.

One NorthEast chair Margaret Fay and the RLN NE manager Zélie Guérin, praised the company's success in a visit this week, when they met workers, including award-winning linguist Claire Lloyd who was named Export Worker of the Year 2005. Read the full article here.

Japanese Cultural guide
A new guide on Japanese culture and business etiquette is available on the RLN website. The guide produced by the RLN East Midlands joins 16 other guides including Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Latvia and Poland.
