Solvit - Solving the challenges of international communications

Solvit is a brand new website maintained by CILT, the National Centre for Languages. The brand was created by Stephen Hagen, and the new website created with the support of the Sector Skills Development Agency and InterAct International, an international SME based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The site has been set up to provide information, advice and solutions for the challenges of international communications. Solvit is a vital tool for any UK business trading in the increasingly global business environment, and wanting to succeed. Whether you need to address language skills in the workforce, source specialist linguists, translate your website or adapt your products to the culture of the overseas markets you are operating in, Solvit can help.

With one in five companies losing business because of language and cultural barriers, it is vital for international businesses to address these obstacles to success. This can be achieved by establishing a comprehensive international communication plan. The development of such a plan should be an integral part of the normal business planning cycle for companies that have an international dimension. The Solvit website can be accessed via the following link www.solvit.org.uk.

£115m to boost language learning

The government is to spend another £115m on providing foreign language teaching in England's schools. It announced that 6,000 primary school language teachers would be recruited over the next three years, and that 18,000 existing primary teachers and 9,000 teaching assistants would receive training to teach foreign languages to their pupils...The Department for Education and Skills stated that England has been lagging behind other European countries in the level of its citizens' language skills. In a survey by the European Commission, almost 66% of UK respondents did not speak any language other than their mother tongue - the highest proportion of all EU countries taking part.

The full article can be found on BBC News. Further news articles featuring languages can be found on the RLN NE website under our News section.
