Just launched - new toolkit for tourism
businesses
A new online toolkit for tourism
businesses in North East England has just been launched. It
provides a comprehensive range of important resources,
including case studies, legal information, details about
Desti.ne, plus information on international marketing
provided by The Regional Language Network North East (RLN NE).
Developed by One NorthEast Tourism, and road-tested by tourism
businesses and Area Tourism Partnerships, the toolkit will
continue to be developed in response to feedback from
businesses. Louise Davis, Head of Tourism at One NorthEast
said: "the Tourism Business toolkit is an excellent reference
resource for all tourism businesses in the region."

Tees Valley is set to host the
latest meeting of the new North East International Networking

in Durham where we overheard a cheerful Guten Tag! Wie
geht es Ihnen? We immediately knew that the company's
efforts to raise the profile of foreign languages in the
workplace were really paying off and we were keen to find out
more.

The North East Exporters Awards
honours individuals who achieve exporting success for their
company. This programme is a premier event for
the region's exporting community. Key partners are UK
Trade & Investment, the North East Chamber of Commerce and
One NorthEast. The dinner will take place on 17 July at The
Hilton Hotel, Gateshead. Tickets cost £55 each or £500 for
table of 10.

As part of the Routes Into
Languages initiative, the Annual Festival of International
Culture will take place on 8 March. The vibrant
celebration of languages and culture will include a
Linguavision Song Contest for schools in the region. The
RLN NE invites you to meet professionals in the region and get
ahead in the world of work with language skills. Spread the
word and let us know if you'd like to get
involved.

Eddie Izzard, Charlize Theron,
Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, and Ricky Martin
are all doing it. Speaking several languages that is, and so
could many young people in the North East of
England! This is a message that the RLN NE fully supports
and through its Business Language Champions Programme will
make this a reality for many young people in the region by
setting up exciting projects, including film making.

The Languages Work campaign aims
to raise awareness of the true value of languages in the
workplace and beyond. There is a wide range of free materials
designed to help promote the value of language learning for
work and leisure, whether you are a careers adviser, languages
teacher, a business speaker or a volunteer helping to promote
languages.

Does your website encourage
learning languages? Have you provided multi-language
podcasts or videos? Then you may wish to enter the North East
Digital Awards, which celebrate the achievements of businesses
and organisations that have recognised, developed and used
digital techniques and technologies. The deadline is 28
March.

The LAFTAs is a UK-wide
competition to make two-minute videos showing the benefits of
learning another language. The competition is open to
individuals or groups aged between 13 and 21. Entries will be
judged by a panel including Sir Trevor McDonald, Eddie Izzard,
Derek Malcolm and Sky Sports' Guillem Balagué. Prizes include
trips to Spain and Germany. The deadline is 31 March
2008.

The next round of applications
for the European Award for Languages 2008 is now open. If you
want to showcase the great work you're doing and be in with a
chance of winning up to £4,000 in prize money apply by 1
February 2008. Applications are invited from schools,
colleges, universities, businesses and other institutions
engaged in foreign language initiatives that are innovative,
effective and replicable.

The Berlin aktuell course takes
place from 10 to 18 April 2008 at the Goethe Institut in
Berlin offers a lively mix of language classes, discussions
and an extensive cultural and recreational programme. Grants
are available to cover the cost of the course fee; the
deadline is 31 January 2008. Priority is given to
applicants who have not received a professional development
grant in the last two years.

A free seminar is taking place to
discuss the challenges faced by community interpreters in the
health services and to encourage best practice. The event is
aimed at anyone involved in interpreting in the health
service. It will take place on 1 February from 6pm to 9pm at
the University of Durham, School of Modern Languages and
Cultures.

The annual conference and
exhibition of the Association for Language Learning will
provide excellent professional development and networking
opportunities. 'Pulling the Threads' brings together
practitioners from across the language teaching world - policy
and decision makers, teachers, advisers, students, writers and
publishers. It will take place at the University of Oxford on
11 and 12 April.

The annual Primary Languages
Show will take place on Friday 29 February and Saturday 1
March at the Manchester Conference Centre, and will provide
advice for those involved in or interested in the teaching of
languages at primary level. An exhibition will also provide
information on resources for learners, parents and
teachers.

England are to get the chance to compete for six-week
educational trips abroad with a newly launched Global
Fellowship scheme. This will give them the opportunity to
explore cultures and societies which the government thinks
will be key to Britain's future.
