CILT, the National Centre for Languages

Promoting a greater national capability in languages

About CILT, the National Centre for Languages

CILT, the National Centre for Languages was formed in 2003 through the merger of the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research and the Languages National Training Organisation. The creation of the new organisation was announced as part of the Government's National Languages Strategy. It plays a key role in managing national initiatives in support of language capability and the implementation of the National Strategy as well as offering a wide range of services for teachers, learners, researchers, users and providers of language services and the business community.

CILT seeks to support and develop multilingualism and intercultural competence among all sectors of the population in the UK. It does this because in today's global society, language competence is important for the wealth and happiness of individuals and communities and for the economic prosperity and peace of the nation.
