German Extension Course

New course for PGCE candidates...

The School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University has recently won a bid worth £140K to become the northern regional provider for the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to provide German Extension courses to PGCE candidates.

Most schools increasingly require teachers to be able to teach two languages. The extension courses are specifically designed to help graduates who have one language at degree level to develop capability in teaching German up to key stage three.

Dr Elizabeth Andersen, Head of Modern Languages, said: 'This is the result of an excellent working relationship with the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences who could give us great insight into teacher training provision and identify where we could add value. Ensuring the students have a quality and enjoyable time during these intensive summer courses will be critical in raising the profile of University both in terms of our languages expertise and our commitment to the student experience.'

Dr Emma Barron, Business Development Officer for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), who supported and co-ordinated the development of the bid said. 'This opportunity is a great example of a School capitalizing on its expertise. Delivering these courses over the summer when traditional teaching stops means that extra income can be generated without impacting too heavily on other agendas'.
